Safe Persian rug cleaning means testing the dyes first, then washing the rug entirely by hand with plant-based soap — never steam, never machines. At the Tapis Boeuf family atelier, founded in 1950, every Persian rug — from Tabriz wool to Qom silk — receives this seven-step hand wash.

My two silk rugs came back today. What a lovely surprise! Deep-cleaned, they look brand new — luminous and silky. Deadlines were met and even shortened. True professionals; I recommend them 100%.

After water damage, my three Persian rugs had suffered badly. Their cleaning was a complete success in the expert hands of the Tapis Boeuf atelier. Thank you.
— The essentials
A Persian rug is knotted by hand in Iran, one knot at a time, often over many months of work. It is the most celebrated member of the wider oriental family — and if your rug comes from Turkey, the Caucasus or Central Asia instead, our oriental rug cleaning service gives it exactly the same level of care.
What makes these rugs precious also makes them fragile. Their traditional natural dyes can bleed the moment they meet the wrong product. Dense wool and delicate silk trap years of dust deep in the pile, far beyond the reach of a household vacuum. Supermarket shampoos, steam machines and industrial carpet plants are their worst enemies.
That is why Persian and Iranian rug cleaning at Tapis Boeuf is done entirely by hand, in our workshop in Sartrouville, 20 minutes from central Paris. It is the most demanding discipline of our artisan rug cleaning atelier — every piece receives its own diagnosis before it ever touches water.

Step 01 / 07
Every rug starts with a blotter test on hidden areas. We make sure the reds, blues and ivories will hold fast before the rug ever touches water.
Duration · 30 to 90 min
Step 02 / 07
The rug is dusted front and back with pulsed air, releasing years of sand and grit that no household vacuum can reach.
Duration · 2 to 4 h
Step 03 / 07
A gentle trial on a hidden corner tells us the right soap, water temperature and contact time for your particular rug.
Duration · 3 to 6 h
Step 04 / 07
Full immersion in a bath matched to the fibres. Washed by hand with plant-based soap and soft brushes — no harsh chemicals, ever.
Duration · 2 to 3 days
Step 05 / 07
Successive rinses in clear water until every trace of soap is gone, with the colours checked at each pass.
Duration · 1 to 2 days
Step 06 / 07
Dried flat on racks at room temperature, with controlled airflow — never forced, never rushed. Up to 14 days for silk.
Duration · 3 to 14 days
Step 07 / 07
The pile is combed, the fringes tensioned, every detail checked. A photo report is sent before your rug travels home.
Duration · 4 to 8 h
