— Oriental & hand-knotted rugs

Oriental rug
cleaning.

Safe oriental rug cleaning starts with a dye test on hidden areas, then a flat hand wash with plant-based soap and slow flat drying — never a machine. At the Tapis Boeuf family atelier, founded in 1950, every hand-knotted piece follows this seven-step protocol, with free pickup and delivery.

My two silk rugs came home today. What a wonderful surprise! Deep-cleaned, luminous and silky — like new. The deadline was met and even shortened. I recommend them 100%.

I VII

Step 01 / 07

Dye testing

Before anything else, we press damp blotting paper onto hidden areas of the rug. If a single dye bleeds onto the paper, we document the risk and adapt the whole protocol. No diagnosis, no intervention.

Takes · 30 to 90 min

Step 02 / 07

Dust extraction

We dust the rug front and back with pulsed air, dislodging the grit and fine sand an ordinary vacuum can never reach. Essential before the fibres meet any water.

Takes · 2 to 4 h

Step 03 / 07

Wash test

A controlled wash test on a hidden corner, using our house-made plant soap. We watch how the natural dyes respond and set the exact contact time for the full bath.

Takes · 3 to 6 h

Step 04 / 07

Full bath

The rug is immersed flat in a basin at a pH matched to its fibre and origin, then washed by hand with natural brushes and plant-based soap. No harsh chemicals, ever.

Takes · 2 to 3 days

Step 05 / 07

Thorough rinsing

Successive gentle rinses in clear water until every trace of soap is gone. The fibre returns to its natural balance while we keep watching the colours for any movement.

Takes · 1 to 2 days

Step 06 / 07

Gentle drying

A soft mechanical spin, then flat drying on racks at room temperature with controlled airflow — 3 to 14 days depending on the piece. Forced drying, never.

Takes · 3 to 14 days

Step 07 / 07

Finishing & inspection

The pile is combed, the fringes re-tensioned, the whole rug inspected under raking light. A photographic report comes with delivery — pickup and return are free across France.

Takes · 4 to 8 h

— The Tapis Boeuf atelier

Why a specialist atelier?

A high-street dry cleaner or an at-home operator uses the same machines and the same products on every rug. Genuine oriental carpet cleaning demands the exact opposite — a bespoke protocol for every hand-knotted piece, built on the artisan rug cleaning methods of our workshop.

At Tapis Boeuf, founded in 1950, the standards have not changed in three generations: systematic dye testing, a hand-washed bath, flat drying, constant colour control. And when a fringe or border needs more than washing, our rug repair specialists restore it under the same roof. For holes, torn selvedges or opened kilim slits, the same hands carry out complete oriental rug repair.
